Hosting under Pressure: A True Story
Here’s a true story that sums it up.

At a recent corporate awards dinner, just as the CEO was about to give their big keynote speech, the microphone system cut out completely. Silence. You could feel the tension start to build, hundreds of eyes on the stage, waiting.

Instead of letting the atmosphere collapse, I stepped straight in. With no mic, I projected to the room, cracked a quick line: “Well, the mic’s gone, but don’t worry, I’ll just text you all the speech, one line at a time.” The audience laughed. The mood instantly shifted. While the AV team scrambled behind the scenes, I filled the gap with a short story about the evening, keeping the audience engaged. By the time the microphone was working again, the tension had gone, and the CEO took the stage to warm applause instead of awkward silence.
